Sri Lanka’s Cities Are Choking: Smog Seasons Worsen as Traffic, Waste Burning and Monsoon Winds Collide

Sri Lanka’s rapid urban growth has brought with it a growing threat: smog and air pollution over the country’s cities. In Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala and other urban areas, a brownish haze sometimes hangs low, quietly choking visibility and health. Experts point to a mix of local and regional causes. In Colombo, vehicle exhaust is dominant –about 60–70% of city pollution comes from cars, buses and three-wheelers . Many Sri Lankan vehicles are old and lack modern filters, so even moderate traffic jams can pump large amounts of particulates (soot) and nitrogen oxides into the air. Other urban sources include industry, power plants and garbage burning. Factories and refineries emit sulfur and other gases, while open burning of organic waste and wood adds dense smoke . Even households contribute: over a third of urban families still use firewood or kerosene for cooking and heating , releasing smoke that mingles into city air.

Vehicles (road traffic): An estimated 60–70% of Colombo’s air pollution comes from motor vehicles. Many Sri Lankan cars and three-wheelers are over 15 years old and lack emission controls.

Industry & power: Factories, diesel power plants and refineries emit sulfur oxides and fine particulates. Highways and ports also see dusty fuel handling.

Waste burning: Open burning of garbage, biomass or agricultural residues in or near cities adds heavy smoke, especially during dry spells .

Household fuels: In poorer areas, wood, coal or plastic are often burned indoors (for cooking or warmth) and outdoors, pushing soot into the urban mix

These sources combine under certain weather conditions to create smog – a mix of smoke and fog-like haze. Seasonal winds and climate patterns also play a role. During the Northeast monsoon (November–February), dry landward winds sweep polluted air from northern India and local burning southward into Sri Lanka. As one clean-air report notes, “pollutants from India and China get transported to Sri Lanka during the north-east monsoon,” and levels peak from late-year through January. In contrast, during the Southwest monsoon (May–October) winds come off the Indian Ocean, flushing the air. An analysis of multi-year monitoring found Sri Lanka’s PM₂.₅ concentrations “show a noticeable seasonality,” with much higher particulate matter from November to February . Notably, special weather events can worsen this. In December 2022, for example, a cyclonic wind reversal over the Bay of Bengal stalled polluted air over the island. Colombo’s Air Quality Index spiked to ~169 (unhealthy), Jaffna’s to ~294, and authorities briefly closed schools and urged masks . Similarly, Sri Lanka experienced its first India-linked haze in November 2019, when smoke from Indian crop-burning traveled over the Palk Strait .

Health and environmental impacts. 

Though smog is “invisible” in terms of chemical exposure, its effects are visible in public health. Particulate pollution (PM₂.₅/PM₁₀) and ozone from smog aggravate asthma, bronchitis, heart and lung disease. Studies in Sri Lanka have found that urban residents suffer noticeably worse respiratory problems than rural people. For example, schoolchildren near a busy road in Colombo had significantly higher rates of cough, wheezing and phlegm than children in nearby villages. In Kandy, one found city schoolchildren inhaled ~120 μg/m³ of PM₁₀ (3-hour average) compared to ~84 μg/m³ in a town-edge school, and only 8% of the urban kids were “perfectly healthy” by a simple health index vs 32% of the suburban children . Hospital records tell a similar story: emergency asthma treatments peak on the worst pollution days. In Colombo, the number of children requiring nebulizer therapy each day was highest on days with very high NO₂/SO₂ concentrations . Overall, a World Health Organization-based assessment attributed roughly 20% of childhood asthma cases in Colombo to local particulate pollution.

The elderly and young children are most vulnerable. Even small rises in PM₂.₅ or ground-level ozone can trigger acute bronchitis, heart attacks and strokes. A 2010 review of Sri Lankan studies concluded that “air pollution may be considered a neglected public health problem in Sri Lanka” . Although exact death tolls are hard to measure, globally WHO estimates millions of premature deaths yearly are linked to outdoor air pollution. In Sri Lanka, that burden will grow if smog worsens. Beyond health, thick haze also disrupts life: reduced visibility forces closures or caution on roads, and haze by early morning impedes photography and tourism.

Climate and city “heat islands.” :Smog doesn’t just sicken lungs – it also alters the city’s microclimate. Polluted air absorbs and re-radiates solar heat, contributing to the urban heat island effect. In Colombo’s built-up core, dark asphalt and concrete already trap heat; smog adds to this by holding radiation near the surface. One local study notes that “air pollutants are adept at absorbing ground radiation, which causes the temperature in the urban area to continuously rise,” helping to create a zone of higher heat over the city . Thus smog can make hot days hotter and nights less cool, stressing electricity, health (heat stress) and ecosystems.

Sri Lanka in global context. :On a world scale, Sri Lanka’s air quality is currently moderate but not benign. In 2024 the national annual average PM₂.₅ was about 18 μg/m³, roughly 3.6 times the WHO guideline of 5μg/m³ . This puts Sri Lanka around 51st worst out of ~138 countries in recent global rankings .Colombo’s PM₁₀ tells a similar story: continuous monitoring shows averages of 72–82 μg/m³ (yearly) .These levels are far above WHO’s recommended <20 μg/m³. Regional comparisons show Sri Lanka often in the middle range. For example, a study found Colombo’s three-year average PM₁₀ (~73 μg/m³) was higher than urban Bangladesh (~46 μg/m³) or urban Thailand (~39 μg/m³), comparable to Pakistan (~67 μg/m³), but lower than some parts of India (e.g. 83 μg/m³ at Vashi) . Unlike India or China’s notorious “hazardous” smog episodes, Sri Lanka’s air rarely hits the worst ranks – but it also has less headroom for error.

Policies and community actions: Sri Lanka has begun to respond. A National Air Quality Management Policy(2000) and later regulations set standards and banned leaded gasoline (2002) and two-stroke vehicles(2008) . In 2023 the government endorsed a Clean Air 2025 Action Plan, whose vision is “Clean Air for a Healthy Nation,” aiming to minimize urban, industrial and indoor pollution through emission controls. Key measures include transitioning to cleaner fuels (higher-quality diesel, unleaded petrol) and enforcing Euro V vehicle emission standards , expanding public transport, and phasing in electric or low-emission vehicles. The plan also calls for better industrial filters, modernizing refineries, and cracking down on waste burning.

However, implementation has lagged. Sri Lanka has very few air-monitoring stations (only one continuous monitor in Colombo Fort since 1997), so data gaps make it hard to target pollution “hot spots.“ Enforcement is spotty: old vehicles often escape checks, and many small industries lack scrubbers. Advocates urge stronger action: for example, taxing polluting fuels, creating “no burn” zones, and planting urban green belts to trap soot.

On the community side, awareness is growing. Surveys by the Asia Foundation found nearly half of Sri Lankans already perceive air pollution as a problem, and a majority support clean-air measures. About 55% of respondents said they’d even pay higher taxes for emissions controls, and ~42% said they’d drive less for the environment. Many local NGOs (e.g. Clean Air Sri Lanka) are educating citizens about smog and advocating for more monitoring and cleaner energy. Simple actions – wearing masks on smoggy days, keeping indoor kitchen ventilation, using public transport – are gaining traction among concerned citizens.

Conclusion. 

Sri Lanka’s cities are not yet in the most extreme danger zone of air pollution, but the trends are worrisome. Recent data show pollution increasing in many parts of the country (even as traffic dipped during COVID lockdowns). Transboundary events (like winter haze from India) and climate-driven stagnation can push city air from “moderate” to “unhealthy” or worse in days. Without urgent action, health costs will climb: more asthma and lung disease, reduced life expectancy, and economic losses from sick days and lower productivity. On the other hand, Sri Lanka still has time. Its air quality is far better than in the subcontinent’s worst hot spots, so improvements in policy and technology could yield big gains. Cutting-edge solutions – from affordable electric tuk-tuks to stricter emission testing – are under discussion. The coming years will test whether Sri Lanka can reverse its smog trend. With coordinated regulations, community engagement, and international cooperation (given the cross-border nature of haze), Sri Lanka’s cities could breathe easier and avoid an urban air crisis .

    Earlier this year, a team of researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association and Wisconsin Historical Society located the shipwreck off the coastal town of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, the association announced on Sunday.

    Named the F.J. King, the ship had become a legend within the Wisconsin wreck hunter community for its elusive nature, said maritime historian Brendon Baillod, principal investigator and project lead of the discovery.

    “We really wanted to solve this mystery, and we didn’t expect to,” Baillod told CNN. “(The ship) seemed to have just vanished into thin air. … I actually couldn’t believe we found it.”

    The wreck is just one of many that have been found in the Great Lakes in recent years, and there are still hundreds left to be recovered in Lake Michigan alone, according to Baillod.

    The ‘ghost ship’
    Built in 1867, the F.J. King plied the waters of the Great Lakes for the purpose of trans-lake commerce. The ship transported grains during a time when Wisconsin served as the breadbasket of the United States. The 144-foot-long (44-meter) vessel also carried cargo including iron ore, lumber and more.

    The ship had a lucrative 19-year career until that September night when a gale-force wind caused its seams to break apart, according to the announcement. The captain, William Griffin, ordered the crew to evacuate on the ship’s yawl boat, from where they watched the F.J. King sink, bow first.
