A viral Sinhala post claims that Sri Lanka’s “අත්තික්කා” (Aththikka) tree can absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) and convert it into stones, dubbing it the “guardian tree of the world.” The claim attributes this ability to scientific research allegedly conducted in Kenya. While the idea of a tree that turns CO₂ into rock sounds appealing amid the global push for carbon capture, the posts misrepresent both the tree species involved and the research’s actual findings.
Here’s what the science really says.
Claim: Viral Sinhala social media posts assert that the Sri Lankan “අත්තික්කා” (Aththikka) tree – identified in the posts as Ficus Wakefieldii – absorbs atmospheric CO₂ and converts it into calcium carbonate “rocks” inside its trunk and surrounding soil, calling it a “guardian tree of the world.”
Fact: Misleading. The viral claim mixes up tree species and misrepresents the Kenyan research. In Sri Lanka, the “Aththikka” tree refers to the cluster fig (Ficus racemosa), not Ficus wakefieldii. According to the Flora of Sri Lanka, F. racemosa is a native species found widely across South and Southeast Asia. At the same time, F. wakefieldii, also known as Wakefield’s fig, is native to East Africa and does not naturally occur in Sri Lanka. The Kenyan study cited in social media posts focused on African fig species, not the Sri Lankan cluster fig.
Researchers from Kenya, the United States, Austria, and Switzerland presented their findings at the Goldschmidt 2025 Conference, where they studied three African fig species: F. wakefieldii, F. natalensis, and F. glumosa. They discovered that these trees can form calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) deposits in the soil and bark via an oxalate–carbonate pathway. This process involves converting calcium oxalate, naturally produced by the tree, into calcium carbonate with the help of soil microbes, effectively locking a small fraction of carbon into mineral form.
However, this phenomenon has not been observed in Sri Lanka’s Aththikka (F. racemosa). While the Kenyan findings are scientifically valid for those specific species, there is no evidence or published study suggesting that the Sri Lankan fig can sequester carbon in mineral form or “turn CO₂ into stone.” The viral claim misinterprets the Kenyan research and attributes its results to an entirely different tree species.
The Kenyan Study Explained
The Kenyan research, led by scientists from multiple international institutions, explored natural carbon mineralisation processes in African figs. Using advanced synchrotron X-ray mapping, they found that F. wakefieldii produced the largest calcium carbonate deposits, with visible crystal formation on the tree surface and in the surrounding soil. The study highlighted that certain African figs could play a minor role in carbon storage by precipitating calcium carbonate, a process similar to the formation of limestone.
Yet, scientists emphasised that the findings should not be generalised. This mineralisation process depends on local soil chemistry, microbial activity, and tree physiology, which vary across species and regions. Importantly, the study never mentioned Sri Lanka’s Aththikka tree, nor did it claim that fig trees can significantly alter atmospheric CO₂ levels at a global scale.
No Evidence of “CO₂-to-Stone” Trees in Sri Lanka
In Sri Lanka, only F. natalensis, one of the three African fig species from the Kenyan study, is occasionally cultivated, known locally as the “Etisalat fig.” The others (F. wakefieldii and F. glumosa) are African species not native to South Asia. Most importantly, no peer-reviewed study has demonstrated that Sri Lanka’s Aththikka (F. racemosa) can convert CO₂ into calcium carbonate or perform the same mineralisation process seen in the Kenyan trees.
The social media posts, therefore, conflate unrelated species and misstate the scope of the research. While the Kenyan discovery is promising for understanding natural carbon capture in specific ecosystems, labelling Sri Lanka’s Aththikka tree as a “guardian of the world” for turning CO₂ into rock is scientifically unfounded.
The viral claim about the Aththikka tree transforming carbon dioxide into stone is misleading. The Kenyan research did observe calcium carbonate formation in a few African fig species, but these findings do not apply to Sri Lanka’s cluster fig (F. racemosa). The claim wrongly identifies the tree species and exaggerates the study’s results. Until verified scientific evidence emerges, such assertions should be viewed with scepticism.

All four victims had been ruthlessly stabbed to death before the attacker vanished through the kitchen’s sliding glass door and into the night.
“The female lying on the left half of the bed … was unrecognizable,” one officer would later write of the attack that killed Kaylee Goncalves. “I was unable to comprehend exactly what I was looking at while trying to discern the nature of the injuries.”
Initial interviews with the two surviving housemates gave investigators a loose timeline and a general description of the killer – an athletic, White male who wore a mask that covered most of his face – but little else.
Police later found a Ka-Bar knife sheath next to Madison’s body that would prove to be critical in capturing her killer.
One of the surviving housemates told police about a month before the attacks, Kaylee saw “a dark figure staring at her from the tree line when she took her dog Murphy out to pee.”
“There has been lighthearted talk and jokes made about a stalker in the past,” the officer noted. “All the girls were slightly nervous about it being a fact, though.”
But after years of investigating the murders, detectives told CNN they were never able to establish a connection between Kohberger and any of the victims, or a motive.
Kohberger is far from the first killer to deny families and survivors the catharsis that comes with confessing, in detail, to his crimes. But that, former FBI profilers tell CNN, is part of what makes the prospect of studying him infuriating and intriguing.

A team of researchers, led by Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, looked at 10 days of extreme heat between June 23 and July 2 across 12 European cities, including London, Paris, Athens, Madrid and Rome.
They used historical weather data to calculate how intense the heat would have been if humans had not burned fossil fuels and warmed the world by 1.3 degrees Celsius. They found climate change made Europe’s heat wave 1 to 4 degrees Celsius (1.8 to 7.2 Fahrenheit) hotter.
The scientists then used research on the relationship between heat and daily deaths to estimate how many people lost their lives.
They found approximately 2,300 people died during ten days of heat across the 12 cities, around 1,500 more than would have died in a world without climate change. In other words, global heating was responsible for 65% of the total death toll.
“The results show how relatively small increases in the hottest temperatures can trigger huge surges in death,” the study authors wrote.
Heat has a particularly pernicious impact on people with underlying health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes and respiratory problems.
People over 65 years old were most affected, accounting for 88% of the excess deaths, according to the analysis. But heat can be deadly for anyone. Nearly 200 of the estimated deaths across the 12 cities were among those aged 20 to 65.
Climate change was responsible for the vast majority of heat deaths in some cities. In Madrid, it accounted for about 90% of estimated heat wave deaths, the analysis found.
