Millions Affected as Canada’s Wildfires Choke North American Skies

Millions across North America are grappling with worsening air pollution as thick smoke from ongoing wildfires in Canada spreads across the border into the United States. Several regions, including Toronto and Chicago, as well as much of the US Midwest, have recorded hazardous air quality levels, prompting health advisories and renewed concerns over the escalating climate crisis and its impact on public health. As emergency evacuations continue in fire-ravaged Canadian provinces, officials are urging people to stay indoors and limit exposure.

Air Quality Alerts Expand Into US Heartland

Smoke from Canadian fires has spread widely across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. Over 37 million Americans are expected to experience air quality classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” or worse in the coming days. Cities such as Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Chicago have recorded unhealthy ozone and particulate levels, prompting public health advisories.

In Michigan, state officials have issued statewide alerts through July 15, warning those with respiratory or heart conditions to avoid outdoor activities and to use indoor air filtration systems. Minnesota and surrounding states are experiencing “unhealthy” air in some areas, with forecasts indicating that conditions may not improve significantly until mid-week.

Canada’s Fire Season Hits Crisis Levels

The ongoing wildfires have forced thousands of residents to leave their homes across multiple Canadian provinces. In Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and northern Ontario, fires have engulfed vast tracts of land, prompting emergency evacuations and declarations of local states of emergency. Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to visit Ottawa to meet emergency teams and assess the unfolding crisis.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan have declared states of emergency twice, initially in May and again on July 10, due to rapidly escalating fire activity. Over 13,000 residents remain displaced in Manitoba alone. British Columbia and Alberta are also reporting record-breaking blazes, with Saskatchewan facing several uncontrolled fires exceeding 200,000 acres.

Cross-Border Tensions and Climate at the Heart

Amid these conditions, six Republican US lawmakers from Wisconsin and Minnesota have formally complained to Canada’s ambassador, attributing the health impacts and disruption to alleged poor forest management and arson, but notably omitting any mention of climate change. Environmentalists have called the criticism hypocritical, noting that these lawmakers backed a fossil-fuels-heavy bill expected to exacerbate emissions and intensify wildfires.

Canada’s Manitoba premier responded sharply, saying U.S. comments trivialised the severity of the crisis. Scientists emphasise that climate change, characterised by rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and low moisture, remains the primary driver of the increasingly extreme fire seasons.

Health Risks and What to Expect Next

Medical experts warn that inhaling particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke can exacerbate asthma, bronchitis, cardiovascular issues, and other chronic conditions, even in healthy individuals. Residents are being urged to stay indoors, use high-quality air filters (MERV‑13 or better), and reduce outdoor exertion during peak smoke events.

Satellite images have captured pyrocumulonimbus clouds rising over burning regions, illustrating the power of these wildfires. Smoke is expected to drift farther east and linger through the end of the week until cooler and wetter weather arrives.
