Honeybees are considered as one of the main components of many ecosystems, as they are a main element of the pollination process. Recently, a viral social media post in the Sinhala language claims that due to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by 5G cell phone towers, honeybees are abandoning their colonies. In this fact check, we examine whether the viral and alarming claims that “5G is killing the living world” have any factual basis — or if they are simply another case of misinformation spreading online.
Claim: Due to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by 5G cell phone towers, honeybees are abandoning their colonies. Near to the 5G towers, the honeybees display abnormal behavior, and labor bees show disorientation and cannot return to their colonies. The electromagnetic radiation of 5G towers is disrupting the natural navigation systems of bees, which are based on small turbulences and electromagnetic signals of earth.
Fact: False. Scientific reviews and expert organizations have found no credible evidence that 5G or cell-tower radiation harms birds, insects, or other wildlife. In fact, a 2019 statement from the American Bee Journal noted there is “no good reason to expect” that 5G networks would harm honeybees. Major reviews conclude that current research does not support the alarming social-media claims linking 5G to animal deaths.
What Does Research Say?
Most studies show that typical 5G exposure levels do not cause bees to die in large numbers or lose their way. While a few laboratory and field experiments suggest that very intense or prolonged electromagnetic fields might stress bees or slightly affect their behavior, these effects are limited and do not amount to evidence of colony collapse. For example, a 2023 field study found honeybees exposed to strong electromagnetic fields from high-voltage power lines showed increased stress protein expression and fewer flower visits, reducing pollination of nearby plants. However, that study involved continuous high-voltage fields, not realistic cell‑tower signals, and did not show colony abandonment. Likewise, an older experiment with mobile phones found bees initially made more noise when phones were on, but all bees returned to normal once calls stopped. In other words, earlier findings of bee “disorientation” under EM exposure did not demonstrate any long-term harm.
More recently, a 2025 study modeled how various insects (including honeybees) absorb 5G-frequency radio waves. It showed absorption rates depend strongly on frequency and insect size. For honeybees, the highest RF absorption into brain tissue occurred at mid-range 5G frequencies (6–12–25 GHz). The authors warn this “could have significant implications for biological organisms” as 5G rolls out. But importantly, this and similar studies are theoretical or lab-based. They highlight that new 5G frequencies are largely untested in nature, prompting calls for more research—they do not prove that real-world 5G towers are currently harming bees. In sum, scientists have found some stress responses in bees under certain RF conditions , but there is no conclusive evidence that everyday 5G tower signals cause bees to desert hives or collapse their colonies.
Scientific Consensus and Beliefs
The broad scientific consensus is that standard 5G radiation levels are safe for wildlife. Health and environmental agencies point out that 5G uses non‑ionizing radio waves at power densities far below levels known to cause heating or damage. For example, international guidelines (ICNIRP) are designed to prevent any harmful heating effects. As UNICEF observed, “experts’ assertions” consistently remind us that 5G does “not kill the living world.” Beekeeping researchers likewise see no solid basis for fear: one expert wrote in 2019 to Bee journal that there is “no good reason” to think expanded 5G coverage will harm bees . In short, no reputable study or regulatory review has confirmed the viral claim. Most scientists emphasize that, if 5G radiation has any subtle biological effects, they would be minor compared to the well‑known threats below.
Major Threats to Honey Bees
Current science identifies other factors as the real dangers to bee colonies. These include:
Habitat loss & monocultures: Shrinking wildflower areas and intensive farming reduce the diverse forage bees need.
Pesticides and agrochemicals: Exposure to neonicotinoids and other pesticides is strongly linked to bee mortality and poor colony health.
Parasites and diseases: Varroa mites (a parasitic mite) and the viruses they carry are one of the biggest causes of colony collapse today. EPA experts stress that, left untreated, Varroa infestation will kill a hive.
Climate and environmental stressors: Extreme weather (cold snaps, drought), pollution, and poor nutrition weaken bees over time. Recent reports highlight these as urgent global threats, with pesticides and climate change already causing “severe decline” in pollinators.
These factors—not 5G radiation—are widely accepted as the main reasons bee populations struggle. For instance, a 2025 international report lists habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and invasive species as key drivers of pollinator decline.
Thus, no recent peer-reviewed research supports the viral claim that 5G towers are emptying beehives. On the contrary, scientists caution that keeping bees healthy depends on tackling habitat loss, pesticide exposure, parasites and climate change, rather than blaming cell‑phone technology.
