As the Southwest Monsoon sweeps in early, several parts of India are reeling under extreme weather conditions—ranging from heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to dust storms and heatwaves. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts across multiple states, warning of potential hazards in the days ahead.
Delhi Records Wettest May in Over a Decade
Delhi witnessed its second-highest 24-hour rainfall in May, recording 186.4 mm of rain, surpassing the 165 mm mark set in 2008. Torrential downpours caused severe waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. The IMD has issued an orange alert, forecasting more rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Notably, the temperature at Safdarjung dropped by 10°C within 75 minutes during Sunday’s showers.
Red Alert in Kerala; Schools Closed
In Kerala, which received the monsoon eight days earlier than normal, five districts—Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Malappuram—are under red alert. Schools and colleges have been shut in several districts. The monsoon-triggered rainfall has also led to containers from the sunken cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 washing ashore in Kollam and Alappuzha. Residents are warned to stay away due to the risk of exposure to hazardous materials, including calcium carbide and fuel.
Tamil Nadu Tragedy: Teen Killed in Nilgiris
In Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district, a 15-year-old boy from Kerala was killed after a tree fell on him near Ooty amid heavy rain and gusty winds. The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rain for Nilgiris and parts of Coimbatore in the coming days.
IMD Issues Orange Alert; Dust Storm Likely in Rajasthan
The IMD has issued orange alerts for Rajasthan, Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra amid ongoing extreme weather. Rajasthan, in particular, faces heatwave warnings for May 26 and 27, along with the possibility of a dust storm on Monday. Warm night conditions are also expected to continue.
In its May 25 bulletin, the IMD warned of thundersqualls with wind speeds up to 70 kmph in Bihar and East Madhya Pradesh (May 26), Himachal Pradesh (May 27–28), and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema (May 27–29). Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions.
Southwest Monsoon Advances in the Northeast
The monsoon, which arrived in Kerala on May 24, has progressed into Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. Over the next few days, it is expected to spread across more parts of the Northeast. The region is set for a week-long spell of widespread rain, with isolated very heavy rainfall forecast in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Flood-like Conditions in Maharashtra, Mixed Weather in UP
In Pune, flood-like conditions were reported in Baramati and Indapur following heavy rains. NDRF teams were deployed, and the Pune–Solapur highway was temporarily closed due to waterlogging.
Mumbai was hit by intense rain and thunderstorms early Monday, marking the earliest monsoon onset in Maharashtra in 35 years. Suburban train services were delayed, and traffic slowed. The IMD warned of gusty winds up to 60 kmph in parts of Mumbai and Raigad.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh saw a mix of thunderstorms and heat, with Muzaffarnagar recording the state’s highest rainfall at 14 mm, while many areas still hovered near 40°C.

As the early monsoon continues to unfold, the IMD has forecast sustained rain, storms, and extreme weather across India. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories for safety.
