Atmospheric CO₂ Sees Record Rise in 2024, WMO Warns

Global carbon dioxide concentrations rose faster in 2024 than in any previous year on record, revealing a dangerous acceleration of climate change. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) reported that atmospheric CO₂ levels increased by 3.5 parts per million from 2023 to 2024, marking the most significant annual rise since measurements began in 1957. This surge pushed global CO₂ levels to about 423.9 parts per million, signalling that even stable fossil fuel emissions are now being amplified by nature’s reduced ability to absorb carbon and by widespread wildfires.

Record-Breaking Rise in a Warming World

The 2024 leap in atmospheric CO₂ came as a surprise to scientists, as it occurred despite fossil fuel emissions remaining relatively steady. The 3.5 ppm increase shattered previous records and pushed global concentrations to levels unseen for hundreds of thousands of years. The WMO described the data as a serious warning sign that the planet’s natural systems are struggling to keep up with human-driven warming. The new figure of 423.9 ppm also places the world further away from the pathway needed to meet the Paris Agreement’s temperature goals.

Researchers suggest that several compounding factors are responsible. Although the global economy did not show a significant rise in fossil fuel use, regional heatwaves and droughts intensified the conditions for large-scale wildfires, which released vast quantities of stored carbon. South America, parts of Africa, and Australia all experienced severe fire seasons that significantly contributed to the spike. The combination of stable emissions, high fire activity, and reduced carbon absorption has made 2024 a historic turning point in the climate record.

Weakening Natural Carbon Sinks Add to the Crisis

Usually, about half of the carbon dioxide emitted each year is absorbed by forests, soils, and oceans. These natural carbon sinks have long served as a buffer, slowing the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. But the WMO report highlights that this balance is shifting. Intense heat, prolonged droughts, and recurring wildfires have reduced the ability of forests to absorb carbon. In some regions, these ecosystems are now emitting more CO₂ than they absorb, particularly during extreme fire years.

The world’s oceans, which take up roughly a quarter of human-caused carbon emissions, are also showing signs of saturation. Warmer waters hold less dissolved carbon, which means more remains in the atmosphere. Scientists warn that this weakening of sinks is creating a dangerous feedback loop. As warming disrupts the planet’s natural carbon absorbers, even steady emissions lead to faster atmospheric buildup. This process could continue for decades, locking in higher global temperatures and more extreme climate impacts.

A Critical Warning Ahead of COP30

The findings arrive at a decisive moment, just weeks before the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil. The record-breaking CO₂ rise is likely to dominate discussions, pressing governments to commit to more substantial emission cuts and expanded funding for nature-based solutions. The WMO says that reducing fossil fuel use remains the most effective way to curb CO₂ buildup. Still, the data also reveal that preserving forests and oceans is equally essential to keep global warming within safer limits.

Experts fear that without urgent global action, the planet could enter a new phase of climate instability, where natural systems become so severely damaged that they are unable to recover their capacity to absorb carbon. The 2024 jump in CO₂ is not just a statistical aberration; it reflects a shift in how the Earth’s climate machinery is functioning. As negotiators gather in Brazil, the challenge will be to translate this warning into tangible policies that both reduce emissions and restore the planet’s dwindling capacity to heal itself.
