A viral post on X claims that climate change is a “con job,” green energy is a “scam,” and carbon footprints are a “hoax,” warning that countries adopting these policies are doomed to fail. The post refers to Donald Trump’s remarks at UNGA 2025, where he said climate change was the “greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world” and called green energy efforts a “scam” threatening national collapse.

What Trump said: In his U.N. address on September 23, 2025, Trump declared that climate change is the “greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.” He challenged predictions by the U.N. and other organisations, accusing them of being wrong or politically motivated. He also claimed that those who promote green energy are pushing a scam disguised as climate policy.

Fact: Calling climate change a hoax or scam is a rhetorical flourish, not a factual statement. Together, they provided about 40% of the world’s total electricity supply for the first time. In the United States, wind and solar alone contributed roughly 16% of the power supply, surpassing coal. This shows that renewables are no longer peripheral but have become central to energy systems in advanced economies.

The economic case for clean energy is also stronger than ever. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reports that over 90% of new renewable power projects are now cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives. In 2024, the average cost of solar photovoltaics was approximately 40% lower than that of the cheapest fossil fuel plants, while onshore wind was more than 50% cheaper. Looking ahead, renewables are expected to meet almost all of the growth in global electricity demand through 2027. These facts directly contradict the idea that renewable energy is a “scam.” Instead, they show that it is a cost-effective and essential path for securing long-term energy stability and economic growth.

The Trump administration’s own climate report

In July 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy under this administration released a “critical assessment” of greenhouse gas impacts. The report challenged mainstream views but drew criticism from climate scientists, who claimed it contained over 100 false or misleading statements. The report was widely reviewed and found to lack adherence to accepted scientific methods and to misstate risks and projections.

When a head of state publicly dismisses climate science and ridicules clean energy, it shapes discourse, sways policy debates, and can influence public opinion. False framing can delay action on emissions, reduce investments, and erode trust in scientific institutions. Meanwhile, the physical risks of warming, such as heatwaves, sea-level rise, extreme rainfall, and ecosystem stress, are already manifesting in multiple regions. Donald Trump’s UNGA 2025 remarks did include striking rhetoric: he called climate change a “con job,” called green energy projects a “scam,” and rejected carbon footprints as meaningful. Those words are real. However, they are not a substitute for empirical evidence or the vast body of scientific and economic analysis that points to the reality of climate change, its human causes, and the feasibility of a clean energy transition. His characterisations are misleading: compelling as political messages, but inconsistent with the data and the rigour of climate science.

    Planning a trip to Jarlshof, the extraordinarily well-preserved Bronze Age settlement towards the southern tip of Shetland? You may need to build in some extra time. The ancient and Viking-era ruins, called one of the UK’s greatest archaeological sites, sit just beyond one of the runways of Sumburgh, Shetland’s main airport — and reaching them means driving, cycling or walking across the runway itself.

    There’s only one road heading due south from the capital, Lerwick; and while it ducks around most of the airport’s perimeter, skirting the two runways, the road cuts directly across the western end of one of them. A staff member occupies a roadside hut, and before take-offs and landings, comes out to lower a barrier across the road.     Even seasoned police officers who arrived at 1122 King Road on November 13, 2022, struggled to process the brutality of the crime scene.

    All four victims had been ruthlessly stabbed to death before the attacker vanished through the kitchen’s sliding glass door and into the night.

    “The female lying on the left half of the bed … was unrecognizable,” one officer would later write of the attack that killed Kaylee Goncalves. “I was unable to comprehend exactly what I was looking at while trying to discern the nature of the injuries.”

    Initial interviews with the two surviving housemates gave investigators a loose timeline and a general description of the killer – an athletic, White male who wore a mask that covered most of his face – but little else.

    Police later found a Ka-Bar knife sheath next to Madison’s body that would prove to be critical in capturing her killer.

    One of the surviving housemates told police about a month before the attacks, Kaylee saw “a dark figure staring at her from the tree line when she took her dog Murphy out to pee.”

    “There has been lighthearted talk and jokes made about a stalker in the past,” the officer noted. “All the girls were slightly nervous about it being a fact, though.”

    But after years of investigating the murders, detectives told CNN they were never able to establish a connection between Kohberger and any of the victims, or a motive.

    Kohberger is far from the first killer to deny families and survivors the catharsis that comes with confessing, in detail, to his crimes. But that, former FBI profilers tell CNN, is part of what makes the prospect of studying him infuriating and intriguing.

    “The female lying on the left half of the bed … was unrecognizable,” one officer would later write of the attack that killed Kaylee Goncalves. “I was unable to comprehend exactly what I was looking at while trying to discern the nature of the injuries.”

    Initial interviews with the two surviving housemates gave investigators a loose timeline and a general description of the killer – an athletic, White male who wore a mask that covered most of his face – but little else.

    Police later found a Ka-Bar knife sheath next to Madison’s body that would prove to be critical in capturing her killer.

    One of the surviving housemates told police about a month before the attacks, Kaylee saw “a dark figure staring at her from the tree line when she took her dog Murphy out to pee.”

    “There has been lighthearted talk and jokes made about a stalker in the past,” the officer noted. “All the girls were slightly nervous about it being a fact, though.”

    But after years of investigating the murders, detectives told CNN they were never able to establish a connection between Kohberger and any of the victims, or a motive.

    Kohberger is far from the first killer to deny families and survivors the catharsis that comes with confessing, in detail, to his crimes. But that, former FBI profilers tell CNN, is part of what makes the prospect of studying him infuriating and intriguing.

    “I fully expected that this is a short-term event, because those are much more common,” Scholz said. “When the burst kept going through July and August, I was absolutely stunned.”

    Follow-up observations made using the Webb telescope also showed that the chemistry of the disk had changed. Water vapor, present during the growth spurt, wasn’t in the disk before. Webb is the only telescope capable of capturing such detailed changes in the environment for such a faint object, Scholz said.     But the new observations suggest that objects with much less mass than stars — the rogue world is less than 1% the mass of our sun — can have strong magnetic fields capable of driving the growth of the object, according to the study authors.

    A planet that acts like a star
    The origin of rogue planets remains murky. It’s possible they are planets that are kicked out of orbit around stars due to the gravitational influence of other objects. Or perhaps they are the lowest-mass objects that happen to form like stars. For Cha 1107-7626, astronomers said they think it’s the latter.

    “This object most likely formed in a way similar to stars — from the collapse and fragmentation of a molecular cloud,” Scholz said.

    A molecular cloud is a massive, cold cloud of gas and dust that can stretch for hundreds of light-years, according to NASA.

    “We’re struck by quite how much the infancy of free-floating planetary-mass objects resembles that of stars like the Sun,” Jayawardhana said in a statement. “Our new findings underscore that similarity, and imply that some objects comparable to giant planets form the way stars do, from contracting clouds of gas and dust accompanied by disks of their own, and they go through growth episodes just like newborn stars.”
