Fact Check: Debunking Viral Claims on Historical Warming and Fossil Fuels

An X post with over 11,200 views and 1,200 likes is gaining traction by spreading misleading claims about climate change — suggesting that historical warming and natural forces outweigh the impact of fossil fuels. Here’s a fact check to break down the truth behind the viral post.

Claim 1 : “So it’s clear the Earth has been warming for thousands of years.”

Fact 1: Partly true, but misleading. The Earth has indeed warmed since the end of the last Ice Age. However, the rate of warming has varied over time. Recent studies indicate that global mean temperature has slightly but steadily warmed by approximately 0.5°C since the early Holocene, around 9,000 years ago.

Claim 2 : “1-2 degrees in 180 years is not a climate disaster.”

Fact 2: Misleading

  • Global Temperature Rise: Since the pre-industrial era (circa 1850), the Earth’s average surface temperature has increased by approximately 1.1°C. Notably, the rate of warming has accelerated in recent decades, with the period from 1982 onward experiencing a warming rate more than three times faster than earlier periods.
  • Impacts of Warming: Even a seemingly modest increase of 1.1°C has led to significant climate disruptions. For instance, Europe has witnessed severe weather extremes, including intense flooding and record-breaking heatwaves. The 2024 European State of the Climate report highlighted that Western Europe faced one of its ten wettest years, with 30% of rivers experiencing high floods, while southeastern Europe endured 66 days of strong heat stress.
  • Future Projections: If current emission trends continue, the global temperature could rise by 3°C by 2100, leading to catastrophic consequences such as more frequent extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and significant impacts on agriculture and biodiversity.

Claim 3 : “Cheap & efficient energy from coal, gas & oil cannot reverse the powerful forces of the sun, orbit, oceans.”

Fact 3: False equivalence.

While solar cycles, Earth’s orbit, and ocean currents do influence climate, the current warming is overwhelmingly driven by human activity, especially the burning of fossil fuels.

Facts:

  • Primary Drivers of Recent Warming: While natural factors like solar radiation, Earth’s orbit, and ocean currents have historically influenced the climate, the rapid warming observed since the mid-20th century is predominantly due to human activities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that “it is extremely likely (>95%) that human activities have been the dominant cause of that warming.”
  • Role of Fossil Fuels: The burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas releases significant amounts of greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere. These emissions enhance the greenhouse effect, trapping more heat and leading to global warming.
  • Natural Factors Insufficient: Models that consider only natural factors fail to explain the observed warming over the past century. Only when human-induced emissions are included do the models align with the recorded temperature increases.
