Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife Conservation has cautioned the public against falling victim to fraudulent fundraising campaigns that are being promoted under the guise of helping wild animals affected by dry weather conditions.
According to the Department, several groups and individuals are attempting to exploit public sympathy by claiming to collect money for providing food and water to animals in drought-stricken reserves. These campaigns, officials said, are entirely unauthorized and do not reflect any official initiative by the state.
Hasini Sarachchandra, Public Relations Officer of the Department, stressed to Climate Fact Checks that the institution does not accept donations from the public for such purposes. “All activities related to the provision of food and water for wild animals are managed internally by the Department using government resources and conservation programs,” she said. “We urge the public not to fall prey to these scams and to be alert about misleading fundraising operations that misuse the name of the Department.”
Sarachchandra further clarified that there is currently no significant drought in Sri Lanka. While dry conditions are normal during certain parts of the year, the country is not facing a widespread drought emergency as suggested in some of these fraudulent appeals. However, she acknowledged that in some wildlife parks—particularly in areas such as Yala and Udawalawe—the Department has been taking proactive steps to ensure the well-being of animals by supplying water and supplementary food where necessary.
“These are carefully managed measures undertaken by the Department as part of our ongoing wildlife conservation responsibilities,” Sarachchandra explained. “There is absolutely no connection with third parties or external groups in these efforts. Any claim that outsiders are raising funds to support such work is entirely false.”
Officials emphasized that misleading campaigns not only deceive the public but also risk undermining trust in legitimate conservation work. The Department reiterated its call for citizens to verify information before making financial contributions and to rely only on official government communications regarding wildlife management activities.
The Department concluded by reaffirming its commitment to protecting the nation’s wildlife and ensuring their survival, particularly during seasonal dry periods. It urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid being deceived by unauthorized fundraising appeals, and to immediately report any suspicious activities that misuse the Department’s name or mission.
