Trump’s EPA Rollback: A Step Back for Clean Air and Public Health

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Donald Trump’s renewed leadership is once again rolling back key pollution rules aimed at limiting harmful emissions from power plants. The new proposal, announced on Thursday, seeks to dismantle regulations established during the Biden era that imposed strict limits on greenhouse gases and toxic pollutants, such as mercury. While the Trump administration is selling this move as a way to save billions for industry, experts warn it will come at a heavy cost, measured not in dollars but in human lives and long-term public health damage.

Major Rollbacks Framed as Economic Gains

The EPA claims that these rollbacks will save about $1.2 billion a year for power plant operators by eliminating several pollution control measures. Supporters argue that such savings could give coal and gas plants the breathing room they need to remain competitive in a changing energy market. The administration positions this as an effort to “unshackle” the economy from what they call unnecessary climate-related restrictions.

However, many environmental and public health experts argue that these so-called savings are misleading when the broader costs are taken into account. The short-term financial relief for industry will likely result in long-term public health expenses. Increased hospital visits, more cases of asthma, heart disease, and premature deaths will weigh heavily on both families and the healthcare system. In comparison, the climate regulation for power plants introduced by Biden last year was projected by the EPA to deliver around $370 billion in savings for the U.S. by the 2040s, averaging about $20 billion in annual benefits through improvements in public health and climate outcomes. The rule was also expected to cut over one billion tons of carbon emissions and prevent thousands of deaths by improving air quality.

Health and Environmental Costs Could Be Catastrophic

Studies suggest that repealing these pollution standards could lead to nearly 23,000 additional deaths by 2035. This isn’t just about carbon emissions, it’s about dangerous pollutants like mercury and fine particulate matter that directly harm human lungs and hearts. As the air becomes dirtier, people, especially children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions, will face significantly higher risks when breathing it.

Charles Harper, power sector campaigner at green group Evergreen Action, said, “The massive cost to the public compared to the minuscule benefits is breathtaking. The costs will be borne by the American people, who will breathe dirtier air, and those around the world suffering from the effects of climate change. The benefits will go to a very small group of donors. Perhaps they should change the name of the agency if they are no longer about protecting the health of Americans.” His words highlight what many perceive as a dangerous shift in the agency’s priorities, from safeguarding the public to prioritising the protection of powerful corporate interests.

The Political Play Behind the Rollback

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, who took charge earlier this year, is widely seen as the driving force behind the aggressive deregulation agenda. His approach has been unapologetically industry-friendly, even allowing companies to submit exemption requests directly to the White House. Critics view this as bypassing established scientific and environmental review processes.

Zeldin and Trump’s political allies claim this is a fight against what they call the “climate religion”, a belief they say has dominated regulatory thinking for too long. They argue that loosening these rules is necessary to preserve energy jobs and national competitiveness. But opponents counter that this framing ignores the human cost and undermines decades of bipartisan efforts to clean the nation’s air and water.

Legal Battles and Public Pushback Loom

The proposal is now open for public comment over the next 45 days, and it’s already facing stiff resistance. Environmental groups, health organisations, and several state governments are preparing to challenge the rollback in court. Many experts believe this could spark one of the most significant legal battles over environmental policy in recent years.

There’s also growing public concern, with polls showing strong bipartisan support for clean air protections. Even some Republicans are uneasy about the potential fallout of these changes.
