At the COP28 summit in Dubai, several nations battled over a potential deal to phase out fossil fuels, endangering efforts to produce the first-ever pledge to gradually phase out the use of oil and gas in 30 years of global warming discussions.
According to Reuters, A climate justice activist from Manipur, India, Licypriya Kangujam was escorted away as the audience clapped. Her protest was against the use of fossil fuels. She delivered a speech after rushing onto the COP28 stage in Dubai. The 12-year-old demonstrator burst onto the stage during the climate meeting in Dubai on Monday, waving a placard above her head that read, “Save our planet and our future.” COP28 Director-General Ambassador Majid Al Suwaidi urged the audience to give Kangujam another round of applause, expressing his admiration for the young activist’s zeal.
She uploaded the event’s footage to X and stated, “They detained me for over 30 minutes after this protest. My only crime- Asking to Phase Out Fossil Fuels, the top cause of climate crisis today. Now they kicked me out of COP28.”
The phasing out of fossil fuels was a topic of discussion at COP28, with nearly 200 countries participating in the effort to find a solution.
This year’s climate conference in Dubai was attended by almost 60,000 delegates from 190 different countries. The 12-year-old Licyprya was Timor Leste’s Special Envoy.
