US President Biden Announces Ambitious Emissions Goal Amid Concerns Over Trump’s Climate Policies

US President Joe Biden has set an ambitious new target for the United States to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 61-66% below 2005 levels by 2035, presenting a bold vision for climate action in the face of potential policy reversals by incoming President-elect Donald Trump.

The updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, unveiled just weeks before Biden leaves office, emphasizes the administration’s achievements, including the Inflation Reduction Act and state-level initiatives. These measures, according to senior officials, make the target “ambitious but achievable.”

However, uncertainty looms as Trump, a climate-change sceptic who previously withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement, prepares to take office. Trump has signalled intentions to dismantle green policies and prioritize fossil fuel production, raising concerns about the durability of Biden’s climate legacy.

Despite this, senior advisor John Podesta expressed confidence that the Biden administration’s investments would yield long-term benefits, stating, that these initiatives are built to last and will continue to support the economy and climate goals.

The announcement highlights the urgency of addressing climate change, with experts like Alice Hill of the Council on Foreign Relations warning that “time is running out” to implement rapid and transformative measures.
