Claim 1 : “So it’s clear the Earth has been warming for thousands of years.”
Fact 1: Partly true, but misleading. The Earth has indeed warmed since the end of the last Ice Age. However, the rate of warming has varied over time. Recent studies indicate that global mean temperature has slightly but steadily warmed by approximately 0.5°C since the early Holocene, around 9,000 years ago.
Claim 2 : “1-2 degrees in 180 years is not a climate disaster.”
Fact 2: Misleading.
- Global Temperature Rise: Since the pre-industrial era (circa 1850), the Earth’s average surface temperature has increased by approximately 1.1°C. Notably, the rate of warming has accelerated in recent decades, with the period from 1982 onward experiencing a warming rate more than three times faster than earlier periods.
- Impacts of Warming: Even a seemingly modest increase of 1.1°C has led to significant climate disruptions.
