In COP28, an another noteworthy event took place – the Climate Innovation Forum. This forum saw the active involvement of major tech giants such as Google and Microsoft. The focal point of the discussions revolved around leveraging advanced technologies like artificial intelligence to address the challenges posed by the climate crisis.
The Climate Innovation Forum at COP28 assembled leaders in global technology for discussions on cutting-edge solutions to address the worldwide climate crisis. Topics explored included artificial intelligence (AI), satellite technology, big data, clean energy, industrial decarbonization, low-carbon hydrogen, and more.
Participating in the forum were key figures from the technology and sustainability sectors, such as His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence; Bill Gates, Founder of Breakthrough Energy; Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM; Kate Brandt, Chief Sustainability Officer of Google; Elizabeth Gaines, Non-Executive Director at Fortescue Metals; and Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President at Microsoft, alongside innovative startups from Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
Adnan Amin, CEO of COP28, stressed the need for unprecedented cross-sector collaboration to develop and scale solutions for the global energy transition. He emphasized the role of technology in translating decisions made at COP28 into practical real-world action.
The Climate Innovation Forum, hosted in Dubai, a leading technology hub, commenced with an address by His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama. He highlighted the dual paths of hope and opportunity versus potential catastrophe, advocating for a technological revolution rooted in environmental responsibility to achieve a carbon-neutral future.
Conversations during the event included a fireside chat between His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama and Aravind Krishna, where they discussed the applications of AI and Quantum Computing in addressing climate change, particularly in the Global South. Google’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Kate Brandt, presented moonshot thinking for climate action, citing an AI pilot with the Chilean government for grid management.
Bill Gates concluded the forum, discussing opportunities for scaling climate solutions. He emphasized the importance of reducing the “green premium” for widespread adoption of climate technologies. Google and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst unveiled new projects during the event, including GeoMap™, a geothermal exploration tool, and initiatives by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies.
The conference underscored Technology & Innovation as critical enablers and accelerators for reducing or removing Greenhouse gas emissions. Challenges such as the “green premium” and the sustainability of technologies, especially the carbon footprints of data centers supporting AI, were also addressed.
