Survey findings reveal that political identity plays a strong role in shaping attitudes, with people on the political right being significantly less likely to view climate change as a major danger.
Growing Concern in Turkey, Brazil and India
While wealthy countries report a decline, several middle-income nations are moving in the opposite direction. Turkey shows one of the largest increases in the past decade. Around 40% of adults in Turkey viewed climate change as a major threat in 2013. That number has risen to roughly 70% in the latest poll. The survey also records rising concern in Brazil and India. Brazil has seen a five-point increase in the number of people who see climate change as a major threat between 2022 and 2025. India shows an even bigger rise with an eight-point jump over the same period.
These shifts appear linked to how commonly people in these countries say they are already experiencing climate-related impacts. Respondents in middle-income countries were much more likely to report that hotter temperatures, altered rainfall and extreme weather events were affecting their daily lives. In a separate survey across nine middle-income countries, more than half of adults said they were very concerned that climate change would harm them personally within their lifetime. Although concern about personal harm has decreased slightly in India and Brazil since 2015, the overall trend still shows growing public worry when asked about broader national and global risks.
Economic Drivers and Political Implications
The findings could influence how governments shape climate policy in the coming years. Falling levels of concern in high-income nations may reduce public pressure for faster climate action. However, the rapid decline in the cost of renewable energy offers a practical incentive that remains strong even when public anxiety softens. Economic benefits linked to cleaner power could help sustain progress regardless of changing public attitudes.
In middle-income nations, the growing concern may push governments to invest more in climate resilience and stronger environmental policies. Public demand for action tends to rise when people experience the consequences of a warming climate more directly. Turkey, Brazil and India are already among the countries dealing with significant local impacts linked to heat, extreme weather or shifting rainfall patterns.
