India Among Top 10 Countries Hardest Hit by Extreme Weather, Study Finds

India has experienced an alarming surge in climate-induced extreme weather events, placing it among the top 10 most affected nations globally. From devastating floods and prolonged droughts to cyclones and heat waves, the frequency and intensity of these disasters have escalated in recent years. A new report highlights the staggering toll: thousands of lives lost, millions of hectares of crops damaged, and critical infrastructure destroyed. As these challenges grow, their impact on lives, livelihoods, and the economy becomes impossible to ignore.

Rising Frequency and Intensity of Extreme Weather Events

India has witnessed a significant surge in extreme weather events over recent years. A report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) highlighted that in the first nine months of 2024 alone, the country experienced such events on 255 out of 274 days, accounting for 93% of this period. These calamities resulted in 3,238 fatalities, affected 3.2 million hectares of crops, destroyed over 235,000 houses, and killed approximately 9,457 livestock.

In the same timeframe in 2023, 235 days of extreme weather, 2,923 deaths, and 1.84 million hectares of crops were impacted. This upward trend highlights the region’s escalating severity and frequency of climate-related disasters.

Geographical Disparities in Impact

The distribution of these extreme events varies across the nation. Madhya Pradesh experienced the highest extreme weather days in 2024, totalling 176. In terms of fatalities, Kerala bore the brunt, with 550 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh (353) and Assam (256). Andhra Pradesh reported the most significant damage to housing infrastructure, with 85,806 houses affected. Maharashtra faced extensive agricultural losses, accounting for over 60% of the nation’s affected crop area, followed by Madhya Pradesh, with 25,170 hectares impacted.

Regionally, Central India faced the highest frequency of extreme events, recording 218 days, closely followed by the Northwest with 213 days. In terms of human toll, the Central region reported the most deaths (1,001), with the Southern Peninsula (762 deaths), East and Northeast (741 deaths), and Northwest (734 deaths) also significantly affected.

Long-Term Vulnerability and Economic Implications

A comprehensive study by IPE Global and Esri India revealed that over 85% of Indian districts are exposed to extreme climate events such as floods, droughts, and cyclones. Alarmingly, 45% of these districts are experiencing a “swapping” trend, where traditionally flood-prone areas are becoming drought-prone and vice versa. This shift complicates adaptation efforts and poses new challenges for disaster preparedness. 

The economic ramifications are profound. The Asian Development Bank reported that developing Asian countries, including India, are not investing sufficiently in climate adaptation measures. The estimated annual financial requirements for these nations to address climate adaptation range from $102 billion to $431 billion, significantly surpassing the $34 billion committed in 2021-2022. Without substantial investment in resilience-building, the region’s economic growth and poverty alleviation efforts are at risk.

Call to Action

The escalating frequency and severity of extreme weather events in India reinforce the urgent need for comprehensive climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. As recommended by experts, establishing a Climate Risk Observatory and an Infrastructure Climate Fund could play pivotal roles in enhancing resilience. Additionally, integrating climate risk assessments into policy-making and increasing investments in sustainable infrastructure are crucial to safeguarding the nation’s future.

As Sunita Narain, Director General of CSE, aptly stated, “These record-breaking statistics reflect climate change’s impact, where events that used to occur once every century are now happening every five years or even less. This frequency is overwhelming the most vulnerable populations, who lack the resources to adapt to this relentless cycle of loss and damage.”

Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from government agencies, civil society, and the international community to implement effective climate action plans and build resilience against future climate-induced adversities.
