Wildfires sweeping through the Los Angeles area have caused significant devastation, claiming at least 24 lives and destroying thousands of structures, according to officials on Sunday. However, amid the destruction, a parallel crisis has emerged: the spread of misinformation, particularly by former President Donald Trump and segments of the right-wing media.
President-elect Donald Trump, along with some social media users and commentators, attributed the deadly fires in Los Angeles to California Governor Gavin Newsom, claiming that the Democrat’s environmental policies aggravated the danger and destruction caused by the blazes.
During efforts to control wildfires in the Pacific Palisades on January 7 and 8, firefighters encountered low water pressure in hydrants, with some completely failing. Former President Donald Trump criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, claiming that his policies, including the alleged refusal to sign a “water restoration declaration,” were to blame. Trump argued that this decision prioritized protecting a fish species over providing adequate water for people and firefighting efforts.
California Governor Gavin Newsom dismissed Donald Trump’s criticisms, stating that responding to such insults would consume unnecessary time. In an NBC News interview, Newsom highlighted the inaccuracies in Trump’s claims, particularly the baseless connection between the delta smelt and the Los Angeles wildfires, calling it “inexcusable” and factually incorrect.
However, experts dismissed these claims, pointing out that Southern California has sufficient water stored. The issue was attributed to local infrastructure limitations, which were not designed to handle fires of such magnitude, rather than broader state water management. Mark Gold, a water expert, explained that firefighting water supply depends on local availability, not large-scale water systems like the Bay-Delta or Colorado River. Additionally, Newsom’s team clarified that no such “water restoration declaration” exists, calling it a fabrication.
“The Los Angeles area is experiencing one of the worst natural disasters in recent years. Social media platforms and traditional news media will continue to share fire-related content as the situation evolves. As the areas affected are beginning to be surveyed, we are likely to see more devastating images and videos in the coming days,” Dr. Julianna Jeanine Kirschner, lecturer at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, was quoted as saying.
A history of false and misleading narratives
Earlier, during his presidency, Trump repeatedly attributed California’s wildfires to poor forest management. While forest management does play a role in mitigating wildfire risks, this oversimplified narrative ignored the larger, scientifically established factors at play—namely, climate change and urban development encroaching into wildfire-prone areas. Trump’s remarks, such as his infamous suggestion to “rake the forests” became a point of ridicule but also served to deflect attention from the urgent need to address climate change.
One of the most damaging aspects of this misinformation campaign has been the outright denial or downplaying of climate change. The scientific consensus is clear: rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and erratic weather patterns—all magnified by human-induced climate change—are significant contributors to the intensity and frequency of wildfires in California. Yet, prominent right-wing figures have repeatedly dismissed these findings, labeling them as alarmist or part of a liberal agenda. This denial not only endangers California but also sets a dangerous precedent for addressing environmental crises nationwide.
In addition to spreading climate denial, misinformation about the fires themselves were also seen. Social media platforms have seen a surge of false claims, such as Antifa starting fires or arson being the primary cause, despite law enforcement and fire officials debunking these allegations. Right-wing commentators have seized upon isolated incidents of arson to dismiss the broader role of environmental factors, further muddying the public discourse.
Other examples of misinformation include claims that wildfires were caused by space lasers controlled by shadowy groups, a conspiracy theory that gained traction in certain online communities. Another widely circulated falsehood suggested that environmental laws preventing logging and brush clearing were solely to blame for the fires. These narratives, often originating from fringe sources, were amplified by prominent figures on social media, sowing confusion and mistrust.
In 2023, several right-wing outlets falsely reported that electric vehicles and renewable energy policies had directly caused power shortages that increased wildfire risks. This narrative ignored the actual causes, such as extreme heat waves and aging infrastructure, further distorting public understanding of the crisis.
The Real Stakes
By distorting the narrative around the Los Angeles fires, Trump and the right-wing media have hampered efforts to implement evidence-based solutions. Policies to address climate change, improve urban planning, and strengthen wildfire prevention measures require widespread public and political support.
Moreover, this misinformation disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, who are often the hardest hit by wildfires. Low-income families and marginalized groups face greater challenges in rebuilding their lives after disasters, and the lack of a coordinated, fact-based response only aggravates their struggles.
Ultimately, addressing the root causes of California’s wildfires—and the misinformation surrounding them—requires a collective effort. As the climate crisis continues to escalate, the stakes are too high to allow political agendas to overshadow scientific truth.
