From Sinharaja to the Knuckles: Climate Change Pushes Sri Lanka’s Forest Ecosystems to a Breaking Point

Sri Lanka’s lush forests – from the misty Knuckles mountains to the ancient Sinharaja rainforest – are coming under new pressure as climate change shifts the island’s weather. Altered monsoon patterns, more frequent droughts and heatwaves are stressing trees and wildlife, disrupting water cycles, and fueling floods and landslides. Scientists report that even Sri Lanka’s old-growth rainforests are seeing declines: a Yale study found Sinharaja’s biomass fell by about 17% from 1978–2018, turning parts of this great forest from a carbon sink into a carbon source as slow-growing trees died from drought and disease. Forest dependent communities and industries (like tea and rice farming) are suffering too. For example, the Knuckles Range now sees “more intense rainfall caused by climate change… [that] has caused erosion and rapid  siltation in upland reservoirs”, while hotter, drier plains demand extra irrigation. These trends are disrupting Sri Lanka’s water supply and food security: watersheds that once ran steadily year-round are now more erratic, threatening both rural farmers and hydropower generation.

Climate Shifts Alter Forest Ecosystems

Sri Lanka’s climate is already warming. Average temperatures have risen, and monsoon rains have becomeless predictable. In the central highlands and wet zone, heavy downpours now often come in short bursts,triggering landslides on denuded slopes . In the dry zone, decades of below-normal rainfall haveparched the land. Farmers report prolonged droughts where they once expected rain . Erratic weather has also altered forest regeneration: scientists warn that reduced moisture and higher heat stress make young trees struggle to survive, slowing forest recovery after storms or fires.

Climate change is thus reshuffling forest zones. Montane cloud forests in Hanthana and the Knuckles are experiencing less frequent cloud cover and moisture, undermining the cool, humid habitat that many species depend on. In lowland rainforests, warmer dry seasons and unusual pests (now able to survive milder winters) are attacking old trees. In Sinharaja, for instance, long-lived canopy trees like the Ceylon ironwood are declining, likely killed by warmer droughts and fungal disease. The net effect is that carbon-rich old forests may release stored carbon as trees die, making climate change worse.

Biodiversity at Risk

Sri Lanka is a biodiversity hotspot, home to hundreds of endemic plants and animals. But many of these unique species face extinction as their climate niches shrink. Recent research using climate modeling shows endemic mountain species – especially amphibians and reptiles confined to narrow cooler zones –are most at risk. Frogs that hatch fully formed (skipping aquatic tadpoles) are particularly vulnerable, because their eggs must stay moist on forest floors. In fact, 21 of the world’s 34 confirmed global frog extinctions were Sri Lankan endemics .

Overall, Sri Lanka’s wildlife is already in decline. National reports note that roughly 66% of its amphibians and 59% of its reptiles are listed as threatened. Now climate change adds a new layer of pressure.Old-growth trees in places like Sinharaja, which store enormous carbon and harbor rare species, are losing vitality. Unique tree species that can’t reproduce quickly are dying out, reducing forest diversity and structure. Birds, elephants and primates may cope better because they can move farther, but even they feel the strain: surveys show wildlife moving downslope or into plantations as forests dry out. Even Sri Lankan leopards, which live in dry northern parks, are venturing into farmland as waterholes vanish .

Conservation Challenges

Protecting forests in this changing climate is daunting. Conservation agencies in Sri Lanka have limited budgets and staff, yet must manage thousands of square kilometers of protected areas. The economic crisis has squeezed funding; for example, a disaster management official reported requesting over 350 million LKR (≈$1.2M) for mountain hazard mitigation but receiving only 10 million LKR. Many projects go unfunded. Sri Lanka’s climate action is held back by “institutional weaknesses and limited capacity to design and implement viable projects” . In practice this means even well-meaning adaptation plans often stall at the drawing board.

Meanwhile, enforcement of forest laws is increasingly difficult. High biodiversity forests like Sinharaja still  suffer from illegal logging, gem mining and wildlife poaching. Even if protected on paper, many forest areas are fragmented or degraded. For example, parts of eastern Sinharaja have been quietly cleared for tea and cardamom over the past decades. Community-based conservation has been tried but has mixed success. The government has promoted participatory forestry where villagers manage buffer forest plots. Adapting Forests for Resilience

Despite these challenges, Sri Lanka is taking steps to safeguard forests under climate stress. The National Biodiversity Strategy (2016) aims to increase forest cover and “shield the country’s biodiversity from the adverse effects of climate change”. Sri Lanka’s National Adaptation Plan (2016) likewise identifies ecosystems and biodiversity (including forests, wetlands and wildlife) as among the most vulnerable sectors to climate impacts. The updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0, 2025) highlights the forestry sector’s role in climate resilience, noting it “supports biodiversity, watershed protection, and ecosystem services, and…contributes significantly to reducing net GHG emissions through carbon sequestration” . New targets aim to expand forest cover, restore degraded lands, and plant millions of trees outside traditional forest areas (e.g. on farms and urban lands).

On the ground, some promising initiatives are underway. A flagship example is an ecosystem-based adaptation project in the Knuckles Range. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Irrigation, together with CIFOR-ICRAF and the Green Climate Fund, is helping farmers at the top of the watershed adopt soil and water conservation agroforestry. By planting tree cover in upland fields and building silt-trapping ponds, this initiative aims to reduce erosion and siltation in reservoirs, ensuring more reliable downstream water flow. Farmers receive payments-for-ecosystem-services (PES): for example, the national power utility funds upstream reforestation because it ultimately stabilizes the reservoir that feeds hydropower. This kind of integrated approach – tying forest health to water security and farmer incomes – is a model for climate-smart conservation.

In the dryer zones, ancient irrigation systems are also being revamped. Traditional cascade tanks and bunds are being repaired to recharge aquifers and keep wetlands (which support wetland forests and birdlife) from drying out. Sri Lanka’s extensive home gardens and agroforests (trees on small farms) are recognized as a climate buffer; projects now offer technical support to diversify these with climate-resilient species (e.g. drought-tolerant fruit trees) for multiple benefits of shade, fruit and soil cover.

Crucially, local communities are central to these efforts. Many rural areas have formed forest conservation cooperatives or “sustainable use zones” where villagers work with the Forest Department to patrol and plant trees. In 2015, for example, the government legally protected all remaining mangrove forests and since then has promoted community-led mangrove regeneration . Sri Lanka’s mangrove initiative is now a UN “Restoration Flagship”: the country shifted from haphazard planting to nurturing natural regeneration,resulting in 500 hectares restored since 2015 . The same philosophy applies inland – new forest restoration projects emphasize science-based planting and local stewardship, rather than one-off sapling drives.

The Road Ahead: Integrated Action

Climate change will continue to reshape Sri Lanka’s forests, but the country is adapting its conservation strategy. Foresters increasingly view climate resilience as part of forest health – preserving not just trees,but whole ecosystems and their services (water supply, soil stability, climate regulation). There is growing recognition that community livelihoods and forest resilience go hand in hand: healthier forests mean stable water and reduced disaster losses for people, and engaged communities mean steeper forests staying intact.However, experts warn that much more is needed. More research is critical: Sri Lanka still lacks detailed mapping of which forest areas are most vulnerable, or which tree species can cope with the hotter climate.

Conservation plans must flexibly manage forests as habitats shift upslope – for example by creating vertical corridors of protected land from lowlands to mountain tops. Law enforcement must clamp down on opportunistic land grabs and illegal logging, even as authorities provide alternatives to communities that harvest forest products.
