UN Chief Sounds Alarm Over Climate Failure as Brazil Hosts COP30 Summit

As Brazil prepared to host the COP30 climate conference in the rainforest city of Belém, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a stern message to world leaders gathered for a pre-summit meeting. He warned that the planet is on track to breach the 1.5°C warming limit by 2030, a threshold scientists say could trigger irreversible damage. Guterres said the choice before nations is clear: act decisively or face ruin, as global efforts continue to fall short of climate goals.

The Warning Before the Talks Begin

At the opening of the leaders’ summit in Belém, Guterres criticised world governments for allowing fossil fuel interests to dominate policy decisions. He accused corporations of reaping “record profits from climate devastation” and spending billions on lobbying and misinformation campaigns that hinder real progress. The UN chief said too many leaders remain influenced by these interests instead of prioritising the future of their people and the planet.

His remarks came as the World Meteorological Organisation reported that 2025 is on track to be the second- or third-warmest year on record. Global temperatures through August averaged 1.42°C above pre-industrial levels, following consecutive years of record-breaking heat. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo described the ongoing pattern of extreme temperatures as an “alarming streak,” reinforcing the urgency of achieving meaningful outcomes at the upcoming COP30 conference.

Absent Leaders and a Divided Global Response

The pre-COP30 summit marks 30 years since the start of international climate negotiations. While emissions growth has slowed compared with earlier projections, progress remains insufficient to prevent dangerous levels of warming. Outside the still-unfinished conference venue, Indigenous activists gathered in song and protest, calling for stronger protection of forests and local communities that are directly affected by environmental degradation.

About 150 heads of state, regional leaders and global organisations were scheduled to deliver speeches during the two-day gathering. The absence of four of the world’s top five emitters was widely noted: China, the United States, India and Russia were missing from the event, and only the European Union was represented at the summit. The U.S. administration opted out entirely, with top officials instead attending an ExxonMobil event in Greece where a new offshore gas exploration deal was signed. Some observers said this absence could allow smaller nations to have a more open multilateral dialogue without dominant players steering the talks.

Brazil’s Leadership and the Push for a New Multilateralism

Host nation Brazil used the summit to strengthen diplomatic ties and rally support for collective climate action. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held bilateral discussions with leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China and the European Union, emphasising the need for a fairer form of multilateral cooperation. Pedro Abramovay, vice president of programs at the Open Society Foundations, said the absence of major powers could create “a new space for genuine multilateralism,” driven by shared responsibility rather than hierarchy.

Brazil also unveiled its new conservation initiative, the Tropical Forest Forever Facility, aimed at raising $125 billion to finance forest protection and restoration. The country expects at least $10 billion in initial contributions to help the fund begin generating resources for tropical ecosystems. China, Norway and Germany were expected to announce financial support, while the United Kingdom, despite helping design the facility, confirmed it would not contribute funds. For Brazil, the initiative represents both a test of global commitment and a step toward aligning climate finance with real-world environmental needs.

  16. Elusive shipwreck found in Lake Michigan over 100 years after sinking
    rutorsite3s7oalfxlcv5kdk6opadvkoremcoyrdm75rgips6pv33did onion
A “ghost ship” that sank in Lake Michigan nearly 140 years ago and eluded several search efforts over the past five decades has been found, according to researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association.

The wooden schooner got caught in a storm in the dead of night and went down in September 1886. In the weeks after, a lighthouse keeper reported the ship’s masts breaking the lake surface, and fishermen caught pieces of the vessel in their nets. Still, wreck hunters were unable to track down the ship’s location — until now.

Earlier this year, a team of researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association and Wisconsin Historical Society located the shipwreck off the coastal town of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, the association announced on Sunday.

Named the F.J. King, the ship had become a legend within the Wisconsin wreck hunter community for its elusive nature, said maritime historian Brendon Baillod, principal investigator and project lead of the discovery.

“We really wanted to solve this mystery, and we didn’t expect to,” Baillod told CNN. “(The ship) seemed to have just vanished into thin air. … I actually couldn’t believe we found it.”

The wreck is just one of many that have been found in the Great Lakes in recent years, and there are still hundreds left to be recovered in Lake Michigan alone, according to Baillod.

    The ‘ghost ship’
Built in 1867, the F.J. King plied the waters of the Great Lakes for the purpose of trans-lake commerce. The ship transported grains during a time when Wisconsin served as the breadbasket of the United States. The 144-foot-long (44-meter) vessel also carried cargo including iron ore, lumber and more.

The ship had a lucrative 19-year career until that September night when a gale-force wind caused its seams to break apart, according to the announcement. The captain, William Griffin, ordered the crew to evacuate on the ship’s yawl boat, from where they watched the F.J. King sink, bow first.

Over coffees, he kept saying they needed to find some candidate to run on freezing the rent. He built a platform and staff out of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Last summer, Mamdani told Archila he was jumping in. He wanted to combine what Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Brooklyn city councilman Chi Osse had done in breaking down traditional politics with compelling social media and a plan to knock on a million doors, he said. He asked when the WFP would announce which candidate it would rank first on its primary slate and told her, “Give me as much time to get there as possible.”

  36. Elusive shipwreck found in Lake Michigan over 100 years after sinking
    рутор ссылка

Scientist Kate Adamala doesn’t remember exactly when she realized her lab at the University of Minnesota was working on something potentially dangerous — so dangerous in fact that some researchers think it could pose an existential risk to all life forms on Earth.

She was one of four researchers awarded a $4 million US National Science Foundation grant in 2019 to investigate whether it’s possible to produce a mirror cell, in which the structure of all of its component biomolecules is the reverse of what’s found in normal cells.

The work was important, they thought, because such reversed cells, which have never existed in nature, could shed light on the origins of life and make it easier to create molecules with therapeutic value, potentially tackling significant medical challenges such as infectious disease and superbugs. But doubt crept in.

“It was never one light bulb moment. It was kind of a slow boiling over a few months,” Adamala, a synthetic biologist, said. People started asking questions, she added, “and we thought we can answer them, and then we realized we cannot.”

The questions hinged on what would happen if scientists succeeded in making a “mirror organism” such as a bacterium from molecules that are the mirror images of their natural forms. Could it inadvertently spread unchecked in the body or an environment, posing grave risks to human health and dire consequences for the planet? Or would it merely fizzle out and harmlessly disappear without a trace?

Israel claimed credit immediately – in contrast to the last time the Israelis targeted a Hamas leader outside Gaza.
The US and Israel had asked Qatar to host Hamas leaders. Hamas’ location was not a secret. There was an unstated understanding that while Israel could assassinate the leaders, they would not do so, given Qatar’s mediation role.
The strike makes a hostage deal less likely, since any agreement requires negotiating with Hamas leadership in Doha.
