Chemical Concerns: Study Finds ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Popular Beers

A recent study has revealed the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” in the majority of sampled beers across the United States. These findings raise questions about the purity of a beverage enjoyed by many and highlight the pervasive nature of environmental contaminants.

Widespread Detection Across Beer Samples

Researchers tested 23 different beer brands, encompassing a mix of craft and major labels from various states, as well as some international selections. Alarmingly, PFAS compounds were detected in 22 of the 23 samples. The study revealed a strong correlation between the PFAS levels in the beers and the contamination levels in the local water supplies where the beers were brewed. In some instances, the PFAS concentration exceeded drinking water safety limits, with the highest levels found in beers produced in North Carolina’s Cape Fear River Basin and Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

These findings suggest that the contamination is not isolated but relatively widespread, affecting beers brewed in regions with known PFAS water pollution. The presence of these chemicals in beer underscores the broader issue of environmental contaminants infiltrating everyday consumables.

Health Implications and Sources of Contamination

PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals used in various industrial and consumer products for their water- and grease-resistant properties. They are known to persist in the environment and have been linked to several health issues, including cancer, birth defects, and kidney disease. The study identified contaminated water as the primary source of PFAS in beer, but other potential contributors include agricultural practices and packaging materials.

The detection of these chemicals in beer is particularly concerning given the beverage’s composition, which is approximately 90% water. This high water content means that any contaminants present in the brewing water are likely to be reflected in the final product. The study’s findings highlight the need for brewers and regulators to address water quality issues proactively.

Recommendations for Brewers and Consumers

In light of these findings, the study’s authors recommend that breweries consider implementing advanced filtration systems, such as granular activated carbon or reverse osmosis, to reduce PFAS levels in their products. These technologies have proven effective in removing such contaminants from water, making them a practical step for brewers concerned about product safety.

Lead author Jennifer Hoponick Redmon, a senior environmental health scientist at RTI International, emphasised that the study aims to “inform brewers, consumers, and policymakers in making data-driven decisions about beer consumption and addressing risks.” She added, “If you want to still enjoy happy hour, then I think you should, but I hope our findings help future happy hours be relatively healthier.”

The presence of PFAS in beer serves as a reminder of the broader challenges associated with environmental pollution and public health. As these chemicals continue to be detected in various food and beverage products, there is an urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address contamination at its source.

Ensuring the safety of drinking water and, by extension, products that rely heavily on water in their production processes, is essential.
