Air Quality Report Warns Delhi Residents Risk Losing Eight Years of Life

Living in Delhi comes with an invisible cost that continues to weigh heavily on its residents: polluted air. A new analysis by the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) reveals that people in the capital could gain more than eight years of life expectancy if the city’s air met global safety standards for particulate pollution. The findings are based on the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI), released on Thursday, which connects long-term exposure to fine particles with its impact on human health.

Delhi’s Alarming Numbers

The report shows that Delhi remains the most affected city in India, with residents projected to lose 8.2 years of their lives due to hazardous levels of PM2.5. The microscopic particles penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, making them one of the deadliest forms of pollution. While seasonal smog grabs headlines every winter, the analysis is based on year-round average exposure, highlighting the scale of the problem that persists throughout the year.

Comparisons with national data put Delhi’s situation in perspective. On average, Indians could live 3.5 years longer if particulate matter were brought down to meet the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommended limit of 5 micrograms per cubic metre. For those living in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, where pollution is consistently high, the gain could be around five years.

How the Rest of the Country is Affected

Across India, the national annual average concentration of PM2.5 was recorded at 41 micrograms per cubic metre in 2023. This is over eight times higher than the WHO guideline, highlighting the profound impact of air pollution on everyday life. The situation is particularly worrying because India is home to many of the world’s most polluted cities, which means millions face shortened lifespans if conditions remain unchanged.

Previous projections under the government’s National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) estimated that reducing particulate pollution by just 25 per cent could add about 1.4 years to the average Indian’s lifespan. This figure, while encouraging, falls short of the benefits that would come from meeting international air quality standards, as reflected in the new AQLI report.

What the Findings Mean for Public Health

Health experts warn that polluted air does more than take years off life; it contributes to widespread illness and reduced quality of life. Respiratory diseases, heart conditions and weakened immunity are all linked to chronic exposure to high levels of PM2.5. For children, the risks extend to stunted lung development, while the elderly and vulnerable groups face greater chances of life-threatening complications.

The latest findings emphasise the need for more comprehensive interventions that extend beyond short-term solutions, such as smog towers or temporary restrictions on vehicle and construction activities. Sustained efforts to tackle emission sources, such as industry, transport, and crop burning, could significantly improve public health outcomes. With India’s economic growth closely tied to the well-being of its population, the benefits of cleaner air extend far beyond longevity, influencing productivity, healthcare costs, and overall quality of life.
