The Indian monsoon, a critical climatic phenomenon, profoundly influences South Asia’s agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods. Understanding its historical patterns is essential for predicting future climate scenarios. Recent studies analysing ocean sediments from the Bay of Bengal have provided valuable insights into the monsoon’s variability and its intricate relationship with climate change.

Ocean sediments are more than just layers of sand and silt; they are repositories of Earth’s climatic history. • Sediment Provenance Shifts: Sediment core analysis, e.g., the BoB-79 from the southern Bay of Bengal, shows changes in sediment sources caused by sea-level fluctuations and monsoon strength since the Last Glacial Maximum. The clay mineral assemblages reflect changes in erosion patterns associated with climatic variations.
