The Herds: An Artistic Journey Highlighting the Urgency of Climate Change

In a remarkable blend of art and activism, the “The Herds” project has set out on a bold 20,000-kilometer journey, starting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and heading towards the Arctic Circle. The initiative features giant animal puppets designed to highlight the impacts of climate change and migration. The project aims to engage audiences emotionally and raise awareness on a global scale about the urgent need for climate action.

Origins of “The Herds”

The journey of “The Herds” began on April 9, 2025, in Kinshasa, the capital city of the DRC. The project includes a variety of animal puppets, such as a wildebeest, a giraffe, and a gorilla, all made from environmentally friendly materials like cardboard and plywood. The puppets were designed by the South African collective Ukwanda Puppets, under the direction of Amir Nizar Zuabi. This project draws inspiration from their earlier work on “The Walk,” which brought attention to the refugee crisis by following the journey of a puppet named Little Amal.

The Journey and Its Significance

Starting in Kinshasa’s Botanical Garden, the puppets’ journey takes them through major cities like Lagos, Nigeria, and Dakar, Senegal. They will continue across various regions, including Morocco, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, ultimately reaching the Arctic Circle by August 2025. This journey is much more than a performance; it serves as a powerful symbol of the displacement faced by both wildlife and human communities due to environmental damage. The Congo Basin, which is the origin of the journey, is the world’s second-largest rainforest, vital for maintaining global climate stability. However, it is severely threatened by deforestation, which the project aims to spotlight.

Community Engagement and Expansion of the Herd

As the journey progresses, local artists and community members will have the opportunity to participate, enhancing the project with regional perspectives and species. In each city the puppets visit, workshops will train local residents to bring the animals to life, helping to foster a sense of ownership and collective action. At each stop, the herd will grow, adding native species—such as vervet monkeys in Nigeria, red deer and wolves in Europe, and reindeer in Norway—symbolizing the global unity in confronting climate change and the diverse challenges it brings.

The project seeks to move beyond traditional environmental activism by creating immersive, emotionally charged experiences that resonate with a wide audience. Amir Nizar Zuabi, the artistic director, explains that the aim of “The Herds” is to “evoke an emotional reaction to the climate crisis, because we believe that is the key to inspiring people to care.” This approach underscores the growing recognition that art can be a powerful tool for communicating complex issues like climate change in a way that is both accessible and impactful.

Challenges and Resilience

The journey has not been without its challenges. In Kinshasa, the team faced severe flooding, with parts of the botanical garden submerged, a stark reminder of the increasingly frequent climate-induced disasters. However, the resilience of the project, much like the resilience required to tackle the broader environmental challenges, has been unwavering, highlighting the strength needed to combat such issues on a global scale.

“The Herds” has a goal of reaching 5 billion people worldwide through a combination of media outreach, live performances, and community engagement. By integrating art, culture, and environmental advocacy, the project fosters a shared global consciousness about the climate crisis, encouraging individuals and policymakers alike to take proactive steps toward sustainable change.
