A recent study published in the journal Biology explores the impact of climate change on two lesser-known species of giant flying squirrels— the Mishmi giant flying squirrel (Petaurista mishmiensis) and the Mechuka giant flying squirrel (Petaurista mechukaensis)—found exclusively in Arunachal Pradesh, India. The research, led by Imon Abedin and colleagues, uses species distribution modeling (SDM) to assess current and future habitat suitability for these elusive mammals. The findings suggest significant habitat loss and fragmentation due to climate change, raising concerns over their long-term survival.
Role of Flying squirrels in forest ecosystems
Flying squirrels play a crucial role in forest ecosystems, aiding in pollination, seed dispersal, and serving as indicators of ecosystem health. Despite their ecological importance, they have received limited scientific attention. These unique mammals possess a gliding membrane, an adaptation that enhances their survival by allowing them to access tall canopies, escape predators, and exploit resources efficiently. The study mentioned that globally, 37 species of flying squirrels are recognized, with the majority found in Southeast Asia, a biodiversity hotspot. In India, 23 species have been recorded, 18 of which are from Northeast India. Notably, two species, Petaurista mishmiensis and Petaurista mechukaensis, were identified from hunter-collected specimens in Arunachal Pradesh and are now listed as ‘Near Threatened’ by the IUCN, the study added. However, their limited distribution and ongoing habitat loss due to deforestation pose severe threats to their survival. Despite their vulnerability, research on their habitat preferences and response to climate change remains scarce, highlighting the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts, the study further noted.
The Unique Habitat of Arunachal Pradesh’s Flying Squirrels
The two flying squirrel species referred to in this study are endemic to Arunachal Pradesh, with the Mishmi giant flying squirrel occupying areas around the Dibang River and the Mechuka giant flying squirrel found between the Siang and Subansiri rivers. The study highlights that both species depend on montane forests, with the Mechuka one preferring higher elevations (1500–2500m) than the Mishmi (600–1600m). The researchers also found that these squirrels are closely associated with riverine systems, which likely serve as natural barriers to their distribution.
Climate Change and Habitat Fragmentation
Using an ensemble of four SDM models, the study predicts drastic habitat reductions for both species under future climate scenarios (2041–2080). Mishmi giant flying squirrel is expected to lose between 17.72% and 55.86% of its suitable habitat, while the Mechuka giant flying squirrel faces losses between 13.45% and 55.43%. Furthermore, habitat fragmentation is expected to increase—P. mishmiensis will see a reduction in the size of viable patches, while P. mechukaensis’s habitat will fragment into numerous smaller patches.
Conservation Implications and Recommendations
The study underscores the need for urgent conservation measures, including:
- Extensive Field Surveys: To validate the species’ presence across newly identified potential habitats.
- Genetic Assessments: To confirm taxonomic identities and evaluate evolutionary relationships.
- Corridor Connectivity Studies: To ensure habitat patches remain linked.
- Local Conservation Efforts: Engaging communities, forest personnel, and conservationists in protecting habitats.
- Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA): Ensuring that infrastructure projects do not threaten critical habitats.
Global warming is a key driver of biodiversity loss, threatening vertebrate species, especially smaller mammals, due to human activities and insufficient conservation efforts. This research provides crucial insights into the vulnerability of lesser-known mammal species in the Eastern Himalayas. Without immediate conservation action, Petaurista mishmiensis and Petaurista mechukaensis may face severe population declines, further pushing them toward extinction. The study advocates for a collaborative approach, integrating scientific research, local participation, and policy interventions to secure the future of these endemic flying squirrels.
