India Proposes BRICS-Led Climate Fund Worth $1.3 Trillion Annually

India has urged BRICS nations to collaborate on the ‘Baku to Belem Roadmap’ to mobilize $1.3 trillion annually by 2035 to achieve climate action goals. This appeal was made during the 11th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Brasilia, Brazil, emphasizing the need for strengthened climate financing mechanisms and collective action among member countries.

The ‘Baku to Belem Roadmap’

The ‘Baku to Belem Roadmap’ is a strategic plan aimed at mobilizing substantial financial resources to support climate action initiatives. India’s call to unite on this roadmap highlights the urgency of addressing climate change through significant financial commitments and collaborative efforts among BRICS nations.

Climate Financing: Bridging the Gap

India emphasized the urgent need for developed nations to fulfill their climate finance commitments. The proposed $300 billion per year by 2035 under the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance is considered insufficient compared to the required $1.3 trillion. This substantial gap underscores the necessity for enhanced financial mechanisms to effectively meet global sustainability commitments.

Common Environmental Challenges

BRICS nations face common environmental challenges, including desertification, pollution, and biodiversity loss. India stressed the importance of collective action and shared responsibility to address these issues effectively. By working together, BRICS countries can implement strategies that tackle these challenges while promoting sustainable development.

India’s Leadership in Conservation Initiatives

India reiterated its commitment to conservation and sustainability through initiatives such as the International Big Cat Alliance, a global effort for wildlife conservation. By leading such initiatives, India aims to foster international cooperation in preserving biodiversity and promoting environmental sustainability.

India urged BRICS partners to join global sustainability initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), and Global Biofuel Alliance. Participation in these initiatives is expected to accelerate collective climate action and promote sustainable development across member countries.

BRICS Nations: A Significant Global Force

BRICS nations collectively account for 47% of the world’s population and contribute 36% of global GDP. The group’s expansion to 11 member countries enhances its influence in global climate governance. By uniting on climate action initiatives, BRICS can play a pivotal role in addressing global environmental challenges.

India’s call for BRICS nations to mobilize $1.3 trillion annually by 2035 underscores the critical need for substantial financial commitments and collaborative efforts to achieve climate action goals. By strengthening climate financing mechanisms, addressing common environmental challenges, and participating in global sustainability initiatives, BRICS countries can significantly contribute to global climate governance and sustainable development.
