India Faces Record-Breaking Monsoon, Heavy Rains Predicted Across Multiple States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains over Bihar, Jharkhand, Parts of West Bengal and the North Eastern states till next Tuesday.

The predictions say extremely heavy rains (more than 204.5 mm) will be experienced in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Sikkim. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall (64.5 mm-204.5 mm) is likely in isolated parts of Gangetic West Bengal on Friday (August 2) and in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

A red warning has been issued for Bihar, Jharkhand, and Sikkim, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Friday. Orange alerts have been issued for Gangetic West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow watch is in place for Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. These alerts will change depending on rainfall intensities in the coming days.

Heavy rainfall is also predicted in Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka.

A weather system that had been developing over East India as a low-pressure area has now formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. Coupled with an active monsoon trough, this is expected to bring heavy rains to the region.

These weather conditions are expected to persist for the next few days, with the intensity of rainfall gradually decreasing towards the end of the week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted record above-normal rainfall in August and September alongside a fair possibility of favourable La Nina conditions developing by the end of August.

According to IMD, rainfall across India in August and September would be 106 per cent of the long-period average of 422.8 mm.

As monsoon continues to wreak havoc across states, the country so far has received 453.8 mm rainfall, a surplus of two per cent added to the normal of 445.8 mm since June 1.

Rescue operations in the landslide-hit Chooralmala in Wayanad have entered their fourth day, with the death toll surpassing 300, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, say news reports. Despite heavy rains and difficult terrain, 40 rescue teams persist in their search efforts. The IMD Kerala has issued an “orange” alert for Wayanad district until Saturday.

In Himachal Pradesh: Rescue operation are underway to trace 45 people who have gone missing after cloudbursts say news reports. Cloudbursts in the Nirmand, Sainj, and Malana areas in Kullu, Padhar in Mandi, and Rampur in Shimla districts on Wednesday left five people dead and over 45 missing.

Devastating monsoon rains in Uttarakhand on Wednesday claimed 13 lives and the death toll continues to rise. Later, 16 people went missing after a cloudburst triggered landslides on the Kedarnath pedestrian route late Wednesday night. According to data from the State Meteorological Center, the state has broken its 58-year rainfall record say news reports. The disaster has left over 1,000 pilgrims stranded at Kedarnath Dham.

The incessant torrential rainfall continues to cripple the national capital. Delhi received 108 mm of rain in 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday, setting a 14-year record for the highest single-day rainfall in July. A woman and her toddler drowned in Ghazipur on Wednesday. The weather office has now included Delhi in its list of “areas of concern” in the National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin.
