Highest-Tier Disaster Warning In China Due to Typhoon Gaemi

By Aayushi Sharma

At least 32 people have lost their lives, mainly due to flooding and landslides caused by several days of heavy rainfall, which worsened when the typhoon moved through the Philippines. In China it caused trees to fall, streets to flood, and crop damage, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. In Taiwan, five people died as Typhoon Gaemi passed through at full strength before moving towards China.

Typhoon Gaemi, after making landfall on China’s east coast, weakened to a severe tropical storm. It caused tree damage, street flooding, and crop losses but no immediate casualties or major damage. In Taiwan, five people died as the storm passed through. The Philippines experienced the worst impact, with 32 deaths due to landslides and flooding exacerbated by the typhoon. The storm displaced nearly 300,000 people in Eastern China and caused economic losses of around 11.5 million yuan ($1.6 million) in Fujian province.

China issued its highest-level disaster alert as the storm approached its coast on Thursday evening, local time. Chinese President Xi Jinping led a meeting with the Communist Party’s senior leaders to discuss flood control and disaster relief measures, according to state media. Train services have been halted in Fujian, and northern Chinese authorities have cautioned that heavy rains could lead to landslides and flooding. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has indicated a “high risk” of natural disasters. This summer, China has faced highly variable weather, with heavy rains in the east and south and intense heatwaves in the north, typically characterized by heavy rainfall from mid-July to mid-August.
